Kiwis support labour's savings policy - National doesn't have one...

New Zealanders overwhelmingly support universal KiwiSaver, which is yet another part of Labour’s economic policy favoured by Kiwis, says Finance spokesperson David Parker.
“Over 59 per cent of Kiwis support universal KiwiSaver, a key Labour policy, with just 16 per cent against it. That’s overwhelming support.
“New Zealanders are taking the economy seriously. They know that as a country we are spending more than we earn and we need to start saving as a nation. Universal KiwiSaver will create a national savings account meaning we don’t need to borrow so much from overseas or sell our land, assets and companies.
“New Zealanders overwhelmingly support several key Labour economic policies. Not only do 60 per cent support universal KiwiSaver, 70 per cent also support our KiwiBuild policy to build 100,000 affordable homes in 10 years, over 60 per cent back Labour’s policy of steadily raising the retirement age to 67, and over 60 per cent agree with Labour that we shouldn’t sell our assets.

MP's twitter battle erupts over 2012 performances...

A war of words has broken out on Twitter this morning after National MP Tau Henare was listed in a Herald on Sunday poll as one of the 10 MPs who should have performed better this year.
Political columnist Matt McCarten ranked Mr Henare as the sixth MP who should have performed better than he did.
"Humiliatingly hawking himself for the Speaker's job to his political enemies because his own party wouldn't support him. When you started life as a working class hero and morph into someone who publicly offered to sweep the floor for Don Brash, there's nothing else to say. Referred to these days as Uncle Tau. Sad and embarrassing," Mr McCarten wrote.
Mr Henare, who is chairman of the Maori Affairs Committee, this morning tweeted about being called Uncle Tau, "like me calling him [Matt McCarten] that back in the 80s 4 not s'portng Maori unionists," he tweeted.
Labour MP Trevor Mallard quickly responded, suggesting Mr McCarten had "progressed while you have regressed".

Evidence mounting against Brendan Horan MP - was using his mother's credit card for years...

BRENDAN HORAN: Dumped from NZ First.

MP Brendan Horan used his mother's credit card to pay for accommodation while attending a race meeting and campaigning in New Plymouth, it is alleged.
He also allegedly used the card to buy a cheap suit, to stay at a motor lodge in Hastings and to pay a veterinary bill for his horse.
The Sunday Star-Times last week obtained hundreds of pages of Horan's mother's bank statements going back to 2000. They show that Olwen Horan's cards were being hammered while she was terminally ill and bedridden before her death in August.
New Zealand First leader Winston Peters said yesterday he relied on the statements and other information to sack Horan, and again called on him to resign from Parliament.
"He's got no business being in Parliament now. He's got no mandate and no business trying to tough this out. It's appalling."
Horan continues to deny wrongdoing but did not return calls to address the latest allegations.
Olwen Horan signed an amendment to her will a month before she died authorising her executor to retrieve money loaned to her Mt Maunganui-based son or "taken by misadventure".
The Star-Times can reveal her credit card was used at the Dawson Motel in New Plymouth on May 27, 2011. Horan was in New Plymouth overnight on May 26 to attend a race meeting, and made a speech to a Grey Power meeting on behalf of Peters when Peters' flight was diverted due to bad weather.
At that point, Horan had yet to be elected to Parliament.
In August 2011, the card was used to buy a suit at Barkers menswear in Papamoa for $99. Horan had boasted at the time about it being a bargain. The card was used at the store again in July this year to buy $990 worth of clothes.
Horan also used his mother's card to pay $300 for accommodation at the Omahu Motor Lodge in Hastings in October 2007.

David Shearer ends the year in control of Labour - next year is an optomistic period..

One year ago today I was honoured to be elected as the 13th Leader of the Labour Party. Labour has a proud tradition as a progressive force in New Zealand life, and I am humbled to be part of that tradition.

We end 2012 in a strong position. Our team in Parliament have held the Government to account for its many failings. We’ve closed the gap on National, and Labour is setting the agenda on the issues that count – the economy and jobs, housing and education.

But for John Key and National it is a year they would rather forget. As I said in my final speech to Parliament for 2012, it’s been the year of the brain fade.

It’s also been a year of disappointment. Unemployment is up to 7.3%, 1,000 Kiwis are flying out on a one-way ticket for Australia every week and the Government has no answer. And that’s not to mention the many debacles in education and the scandals in ACC and the GCSB.

The Government has taken its eye off the ball, and New Zealand is drifting.

Kiwis deserve better, and Labour has spent the last 12 months doing the hard yards in Opposition so that we are ready to deliver in Government come 2014.

We’ve charted a new direction for New Zealand, where a hands-on Labour Government backs our families, workers and businesses. We’ve rolled out major new policies on affordable housing, education and jobs.

There’s plenty more hard work to be done, but as the year winds down Labour can look back on a great year.
