Burmese leader calls for our help

Aung San Suu Kyi makes a phone call to Labour's foreign affairs spokeswoman asking for help to reform her country

3 December 2010
Burmese democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi has spoken to Labour's foreign affairs spokeswoman, Maryan Street, and pleaded for help for reform in her country.

The Nobel peace laureate's been released from house arrest and spoke to Ms Street for 20 minutes last night.

Ms Street says she asked how New Zealand can assist her in her goal of a peaceful negotiation for all of Burma. The democracy leader believes our close relationship with ASEAN nations can help us do that.

Ms Street says our government isn't doing enough to support democracy activists.

Foreign affairs minister, Murray McCully, has decided New Zealand will call the country Burma, rather than the military junta's name Myanmar. Good comment.

Just what has National offered to do for Burma?

Hi Peter,

Democratic countries should work together to pressure the military junta in Myanmar, including continuously try to persuade other Asean countries.
