A 31-year-old man has been charged with the manslaughter of Michael Mullholland a few hours after Desmond Leaf appeared on the same charge.
WELLINGTON, Oct 2 NZN - A second man has been charged with the gang-related manslaughter of Lower Hutt man Michael Mulholland last month.
Paraparaumu's Harlem Turi, 31, was arrested on Tuesday morning for the manslaughter of Mr Mulholland, 52, and appeared in Lower Hutt District Court on Tuesday afternoon.
Desmond Leaf, 30, has already appeared in the court charged with the manslaughter of Mr Mulholland, whose body was found in a driveway in the suburb of Taita last month.
Both Turi and Leaf are understood to be Mongrel Mob members while police said Mr Mulholland may have had connections with the gang.
Leaf's lawyer Stephen Gill told the court on Tuesday that his client admitted punching Mr Mulholland once after he had been invited to Mr Mulholland's house, but that Mr Mulholland then drove somewhere else and had a heart attack an hour later.
His defence at trial would be that the punch did not cause Mr Mulholland's death, Mr Gill said.
"He didn't run away then and he's not going to run away now."
Leaf's bail application is opposed by police on the grounds he has not turned up to court for other charges, including breaching bail, drink driving and driving while disqualified.
However, Leaf's lawyer Stephen Gill told Judge Oke Blaikie his client had been co-operating with police with their investigation so far.
Judge Oke Blaikie ordered a bail hearing to be held next week. Leaf was remanded in custody until then.
Turi will next appear in court on October 11.
